1. Chosen Contribution Team
For the WPCredits project, I decided to join the WordPress Polyglots team, which is responsible for translating different tools, plugins, and content within the WordPress ecosystem into various languages.
In my case, I chose to contribute translations into Costa Rican Spanish (es_CR), with the goal of helping more people use WordPress tools in their own language.
2. Reasons Why I Chose This Team
I chose Polyglots because I thought it was an interesting way to participate in an open-source project without focusing only on programming. What caught my attention was how something as simple as translating text can help improve the experience of many people who use WordPress.
I also see it as a good opportunity to learn how a community of contributors works together on the same project from different parts of the world.
3. Contribution Project
Within the Polyglots team, I selected WooCommerce, a WordPress plugin that allows users to create and manage online stores.
My contribution consists of translating text strings from English into Costa Rican Spanish. These strings include system messages, configuration options, buttons, notifications, and other text displayed when using WooCommerce.
To complete these translations, I use the Translate WordPress platform, where I can select untranslated strings, suggest translations, and check their status.
The goal established for this project is to contribute 300 translated strings during the academic term.
4. Relationship With My Skills and Interests
I am currently studying Systems Engineering at Universidad Fidélitas, so I am familiar with different technological tools and how applications and computer systems work.
I believe this knowledge can help me understand the context of the text I need to translate, especially when it includes technical terms related to settings, databases, products, or application processes.
I am also interested in discovering different ways to participate in technology projects because software development is not only about writing code. It is also about creating tools that are understandable and accessible to users.
5. What I Expect to Learn
During this program, I hope to learn more about how WordPress and its community of contributors work, especially the process that translations go through before being approved.
I also want to improve my ability to understand technical terms in English and translate them correctly into Spanish while maintaining their original meaning.
Another aspect I am interested in is understanding how contributions are organized in open-source projects and how the work of different people can help improve the same platform.
6. What I Hope to Achieve
By the end of the WPCredits program, my main goal is to have completed the 300 translation strings required for the project and to have as many of them approved as possible by WordPress reviewers.
In addition to achieving this goal, I hope to gain a better understanding of the software translation process and the importance of community participation in developing open-source tools.
